Urban Biodiversity Index for the City of Buenos Aires

Biodiversity management in urban environments is a topic of growing interest on the international agenda given its impact on improving the quality of life of a population that, on a global level, increasingly lives in urban areas. The Convention on Biological Diversity has developed a global initiative and approved a generic standard for assessing and monitoring the evolution of cities regarding their provision of a habitat for wildlife species, ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration or water regulation, and public policies for biodiversity management, environmental education and citizen’s access to green natural areas.

CICLA and UTN developed a comparative analysis on international experiences, the identification of a network of actors and suitable institutions to provide information and monitoring services, and the development of measurement indicators, verifiers and methodologies for the creation of an Urban Biodiversity Index for the City of Buenos Aires. The project will establish the baseline for each selected indicator, provide recommendations on the implementation of management improvements aimed at elevating the city’s biodiversity standard, and train the Government of the City of Buenos Aires’ team to update the index on a regular basis.
